Faith restored (a bit)

September 15th, 2009 by gddik

I recently opined on this blog about the profligacy of some, in my view, overpaid professional football players. Recent events involving diving, deliberate kicks to the head of an ex-team-mate and provocative goal celebrations to a former club’s fans (who were at the other end of the stadium, so requiring a 90-yard dash) have only served to reinforce my opinions.

However, it seems that football is capable of fostering genuinely heart-warming behaviour by honest, decent folk at all levels - fans, players and administrators. And wouldn’t you just know it? It isn’t at the rich and mighty clubs from the Premiership. No, it’s at League One (that’s the old Third Division to those of us old enough to remember) club Stockport County, which is currently in such poor financial shape that it is in administration. What Chelsea players spend on champagne in one night would probably pay their wage bill.

I won’t repeat the details of the story here, but I encourage you to read it for yourself on the BBC web site.

It has restored my faith in the game and its people.
