Wherefore art thou, Alfa Romeo?

November 28th, 2007 by gddik

My hankering for an Alfa Romeo 156, based entirely on a courtesy-car try-out a couple of years ago, and the subject of much goading by Eluned for me to get one, is about to be realised when I pick one up on Saturday. A rather attractive 2001 vintage 156 1.8 TS Veloce, no less, in a fetchingly dark shade of blue, with only 43,000 on the clock, and full black leather interior.

The change has been brought about by the appearance of a rather expensive-looking gearbox fault on my Rover 45. It being an automatic gearbox (I’ve never warmed to automatics - give me a manual gear-shift any day), the price goes up exponentially, as does the difficulty of finding anyone who can / will do the job. The nearest place I could find is in about 50 miles away in Queensferry, with all the added inconvenience of getting there, hanging about and maybe getting trains there and back if it’s an overnight job.

Otherwise, it’s a lovely car, and I’d keep it, but I just don’t want the hassle, so I’m trading it in. (And no, I won’t get rumbled by the dealer - I’ve fessed up to the fault…)

So, Eluned - you win - I’ll have the Alfa that you wanted me to have. And I hope it turns out to be as much fun to drive as I remember the courtesy car being. Mind you, that one had the wooden steering wheel and dashboard - the full monty… Very 1950’s.
