On exhibiting for the first time.
Since January 2013, I have been a founder-member of a collaborative group of street photographers based in North Wales, that go under the collective title of StreetSeen. Our first exhibition took place at Oriel Colwyn in Colwyn Bay, between Monday 23 September and Friday 11 October 2013.
It was the first time any of us (two other StreetSeen photographers – Anne Muth and Roy Barry – were exhibiting) had shown our work in public, so it was a little nerve-wracking for all of us. However, Paul Sampson, the scandalously unpaid curator at Oriel Colwyn, did a great job with advice and practical help, and must take a huge slice of credit for what, for us as a group and as individuals, was a great success.
Our fears, it seems, were unfounded. The reactions on the opening night with invited guests, and since from the great British exhibition-going public, has been excellent and will only encourage us to do more similar events. I’d urge anyone who’s never exhibited before to have a go; it was great fun.
